The ratio ‘n’ of the speed of light in a vacuum ‘c’, or interstellar space, to the speed of light in a material ‘v’ is called the material’s index of refraction (n = c/v). The higher a material’s index of refraction, the greater the deviation of light from its original direction when it enters the material at an angle.
